Objective

Building on the Induction course, the Certificate in Playwork Practice aims to enable those working with children in any setting to articulate, develop and evaluate their playwork practice.


Content

  • In-depth exploration of theories and techniques and how these are used when working with children
  • Interactive exercises to enable participants to explain and reflect on their playwork practice decisions
  • A field trip to enable participants to reflect on the theories and techniques covered in the course in action

Shelly Newstead, Managing Director of Common Threads, has been working with Playright Children’s Association to develop playwork training in Hong Kong since 2009. Shelly is an experienced playwork practitioner and author, and is currently completing at PHD on playwork practice at the Institute of Education in London. She is the Managing Editor of Journal of Playwork Practice, the first academic journal for those working in playwork, and is also the Vice-President of the International Council for Children’s Play. Shelly has already written extensively about many different aspects of playwork, and is currently writing a playwork textbook (to be published by Routledge 2018). She is also the Series Editor for the popular ‘Buskers Guides’ series (now published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers), and the co-editor of ‘Researching Play from a Playwork Perspective’ (to be published by Routledge in August 2017).
